Tips For Web Designers

This is just a short, quick article to give our fellow web designers a few tips about web design and how it relates to search engine rankings. We have seen many good designers in our time, but I’m constantly shocked at some of these designers lack of basic search engine knowledge! What good is building a big fancy website if it is nowhere to be found?

Okay, I’m gonna break this down into a simple list of tips. Each one could actually have its’ own article page going into detail about it, but we’re not going to do that right now. I just want to lay these out on the table for now to give new or uninformed web designers a few guidelines to keep in mind when designing a website. These tips are really more than just “web design tips” they are basically website business tips as well.

  • *No busy backgrounds on photos – This takes away from the main content, which is your voice or sales pitch.
  • *Flash is bad – The search engines, including Google-Bot hate flash. They just can’t read it. This may eventually change, but no time in the forseeable future.
  • *CSS is good – When used properly CSS organizes and simplifies site coding which makes the search engines’ robots’ jobs easier!
  • *Importance of SEO on a local level – Is the site you’re working on optimized on a local level? Does it need to be? If not learn how (or hire us to do it.)
  • *How much is a website? $50-$50,000. This can range very much depending on several different factors. It is important to give the customer a firm agreed upon price or small price range in writing.
  • *Moore’s Law and how it pertains to website design – If you don’t know Moore’s Law, please Google it.
  • *Any wording should be electronic, not faxed. This makes it easier to keep track of everything, besides it’s almost 2010, not 1994.

Those are just a few of many tips and things that you need to learn and incorporate about web design and the business surrounding it. Website design and marketing is an ever-changing business. We are contantly learning, growing, and re-learning.

There’s some famous quote that I’ve heard before that pertains to this topic and life in general. It goes something like; “The more I learn and know, the more I find out that I don’t know.” Basically even the wise man knows that he does not know it all. The teacher can and does learn from the students as well.

If you are going to be into web design, you need to keep your skills up and fresh. Also, don’t think that you can get into web design without at least learning the basics of SEO.
